Joseph 'Joe' Mitchell, 89 years, passed peacefully at home and surrounded by his loving family on December 19th, 2018.  Joe was known as a kind soul with a generous heart. As a young man, Joe enlisted in the Army, served in the Korean War and was critically injured during a mortar attack near the 38th Parallel. For his service, Joe was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his service to his country, he attended Rutger's University, was employed as a government contractor and supervisor for Western Union. Later in life, Joe formed and owned his own company, Susquehanna Tax Collection. In addition, Joe was active in the church, an avid and talented writer and a member of the American Legion Post 201. However, Joe's greatest joy was spending time with his family which he treasured. Joe is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maureen and their 3 children: Kevin, Susan and Sean. Additionally, he has 5 grandchildren: Matthew, Anthony, Courtney, Elise and Catherine, all of whom adored him. Joe will be missed by his family but they are grateful to know he is now in Heaven with Jesus.
A Catholic mass will be held at 11 am on Saturday December 22nd, 2018 at Sacred Heart Church in Lewisburg. A viewing will follow at the Joseph Epler Funeral Home in Northumberland from 1-3 pm. Contributions to Joe's memory can be made to St. Joseph's Indian School: 1301 N. Main St., Chamberlain, SD 57325 or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
