Victor Hare Obituary

Victor W. “Son” Hare Jr., longtime resident of Northumberland, passed away Friday, Jan. 24, 2020, at his home at the Rockwell Retirement Center, Milton.
He was born Nov. 18, 1932, in Sunbury, a son of the late Victor W. Sr. and Irene (Umholtz) Hare. He is survived by his wife, Donna Jean (Yeager) Hare whom he married Oct. 24, 1987, after dating since 1973.
He was a graduate of Mooseheart in Illinois, sponsored by the Sunbury Moose Lodge. Victor participated and excelled in many sports. He was enshrined in the school’s Football Hall of Fame, and as a quick running back was given the nickname “Rabbit”. He later tried out in baseball at the professional level.
Mr. Hare served with the Army during the Korean War from Aug. 24, 1953, until his honorable discharge on June 22, 1955, with the rank of Corporal.
He was employed by Celotex, Inc., Sunbury, as a machine operator, until his retirement.
Mr. Hare attended Albright United Methodist Church in Sunbury. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 897, American Legion Post No. 44, VFW No. 8298, all of Northumberland and the Northumberland No. 1 Fire Company.
Son was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and spending two weeks each year at the hunting cabin in Laporte. As a sports fan he enjoyed playing slow-pitch softball for local leagues, watching football and baseball and was a St. Louis Cardinals and Notre Dame fan. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family including his brothers and sisters.
In addition to his wife of 32 years, Victor is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard A. and Barbara B. Hare of Northumberland and Kyle D. and Denise R. Hare of Mifflinburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley E. and Donald L. “Ducky” Stevenson of Sunbury; his stepchildren, Mark, Julia, and Todd Simpson; grandchildren, Jeremy, Justin, Bradley and wife Susie, Shannon, Rebecca and husband Vince, Natalie, Colton and Brock; step-grandchildren, Paige, Jaelise, Dillon and Bree; great-grandchildren, Pacey, Carter, Timothy, Kirsten, Brandon and Bryce; and one sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Ronald Sanders of Mechanicsburg.
He was preceded in death by his son, Butch; stepson, Jason Simpson; brother, Robert L. Hare; sisters, Nancy I. Ressler and Peggy J. Wilt; and stepmother, Mildred Frankford.
Friends and family may visit from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland, where the funeral service will be held at noon.
Burial with military honors will follow in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury.
