Spessard "Spess" J. Hoffman, 92, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, June 1, 2024, where he was reunited with his wife Vi of almost 50 years, who preceded him in death in 2002.
Spess was born April 19, 1932, in Hyde, a son of the late Bessie (Auker) and Rev. Raymond Hoffman. He married Violet Wolfe on June 21, 1952.
Spess is survived by one son, Spess Lee of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Cheri (Rod) Murphy and Connie (Ray) Clymer, both of Sunbury; three grandsons, Clif (Jenna) Clymer, Northumberland, and Rodney (Emily) Murphy and Ricky Murphy, both of Sunbury; and four great-grandchildren, Emma, Lillee, Baillee Murphy and Cannon Clymer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Carl Leo; one daughter, Candy Marie; one brother, David "Bus" Hoffman; and four sisters, Clara Mae, Jemella, Ruth, Greta and their spouses.
Spess loved the Lord, his family, his friends, and his customers as much as they all loved him. He was a real "people person." He was always quick with a witty comeback. In his free time he did more than 200 latch hook rugs and over 600 puzzles.
Spess loved all his "jobs" which never seemed like work to him including paperboy, Sunbury Textile Mills (1951-1953), Clarks Feed Mill (1953-1957), Schreffler, Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac (1957-1972), Blank Funeral Home (1974-2012), Knoebels Grove, Graci's Flower Shop, Spess' Restaurant and Motels which he owned and operated.
The family wishes to thank all his loyal customers and friends through the years. A special thank you to Watsontown Nursing and Rehab staff for the loving care dad received. Also, we appreciate all the care from Residential Hospice.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at Blank Funeral Home, Sunbury, and again from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, June 7, at Emmanuel Bible Fellowship Church, Mile Hill Road, Sunbury, PA 17801, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Jeff Dunkle officiating.
Arrangements are by the Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury.
