Richard A. "Dick" Simpson, 76, of Hanover Street, Northumberland, passed away Monday, Dec. 18, 2023, at his home.
Dick was born April 16, 1947, in Sunbury, a son of the late John F. and E. Jane (Gass) Simpson.
He was a graduate of the last class of Northumberland High School in 1965. In 1970 he received a degree in business management from Williamsport Community College. Dick completed his degree in 1971 at the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.
Dick proudly served in the Navy Reserves active duty from July 20, 1965 until Sept. 19, 1967.
As a licensed funeral director, Dick was employed for many years and currently with the Zweier Funeral Home and Blank Funeral Home of Sunbury and the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, Northumberland.
In the past Dick served as a Northumberland County deputy coroner.
He was a partner in Sid Suds Tavern and longtime owner of A.C. Rohrbach Distributor.
He was a life member of the First Reformed Church of Christ, Sunbury.
Dick dedicated his life to veteran and community service including the American Legion Post No. 44 where he served several terms as Commander and at least one term in all offices. He served a two year term as District Commander of the 17th District of the Pennsylvania American Legion.
He was a life member of the Northumberland Hook & Ladder Fire Co., Northumberland Fire Co. No. 1, Point Township Fire Co., Sunbury Good Intent Fire Co. and Good Will Hose Co. and served as the Sunbury Fire Department Chaplain for 28 years.
He was a former Chief Registrar for the Northumberland County Voter Registration office from 1976 to 1983 and served on the Northumberland Borough Council from 1978 to 1981.
Dick was recognized as Pineknotter of the Year in 2010 and was the recipient of the Sunbury Caring Award in 2017.
In his personal time, Dick enjoyed golfing and tending to his flower beds.
He is survived by his son, Sean M. Deiter Sr. and wife Tonya; daughter, Shannon Reed; grandson, Sean M. Deiter Jr.; brother, Jack H. Simpson; and two sisters, Cynthia Ann Simpson and Sandra S. Heintzelman.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald L. Simpson; and a sister, Helen Elizabeth "Beth" Maki.
A visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at the First Reformed United Church of Christ, 160 Chestnut St., Sunbury, followed by a Sunbury Fire Department Honor Service. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jonathan Albright officiating.
Interment with military honors will be in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland.
