Melvin P. "Mel" Broome, 97, of Hillside Road, Sunbury, passed away Friday, Oct. 27, 2023, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
Mel was born Sept. 13, 1926, in Sunbury, the son of the late C. Melvin Broome and Mary (Kline) Broome.
He was married on June 7, 1949, to Annie Sue Kline and they celebrated 61 years of marriage before her passing on May 16, 2011.
Mel graduated from Sunbury High School in 1944. In 1949, he was awarded a bachelor of science degree in commerce and finance from Bucknell University.
He served as a Radioman in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mel retired as plant controller at Celotex after 32 years of employment there. Previous employers included Burpee Seed and Theron D. Conrad & Co.
He was a dedicated and loving husband and father. His hobbies included walking, wood working, and gardening. He was an avid fan of Penn State and Eagles football.
Mel was a member of Americus Hose Company and American Legion Post 201. He attended Albright United Methodist Church and its successor, Faith United Methodist Church, where his activities included Sunday school teacher and church treasurer.
He is survived by his daughter, Gail Broome, Northumberland.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Nov. 2, at the Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury.
Interment will follow in Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, 203 Arch St., Sunbury, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
