Lucille G. Herman passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2026 at Nottingham Village Retirement Center at the age of 97.  She was born on November 23, 1928 in Sunbury to Albert Lee and Pauline Florence Kreider George.  “Lucy” was the youngest of six children - Albert, Jr., Walter, Louise, Aberdeen and Jay, each of whom preceded her in death.

 

Lucille graduated from Sunbury HS with the Class of 1946.  She was employed at the Susquehanna Silk Mill before moving to Washington, D.C. to work as a secretary for The Small Business Administration and The Department of Commerce.

 

Lucille married Maurice C. Herman on August 27, 1955 at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewisburg, the town in which they made their home for 63 years before moving to Nottingham Village. Maurice’s passing on November 30, 2020 broke a marital union of 65 years.

 

After she married, Lucille was a stay-at-home-mom.  She learned to cook, bake and also became a very good seamstress.  As a result of Maurice’s large gardens and fruit trees, she learned to freeze and can fruits, vegetables, juice and jellies.  Needless to say, the family never went hungry.  Some of our favorite memories were made at Poe Valley State Park where we camped in tents and cabins, went swimming and had many Sunday picnics.

 

Lucille was one whose outfits and shoes needed to match, and she always had a necklace or pin with matching earrings to complete “the look.”  She loved thrift stores and yard sales and should have had a bumper sticker warning folks “I brake for yard sales.”  Lucille was an avid reader, sitting outside in the sun or in her recliner.  She was a competitive game player, especially marbles.  When the Herman family was together, there was always a card game of pinochle, hand & foot or Hawaiian rummy being played.  Lucille enjoyed spending time with her friends at Nottingham Village, doing jigsaw puzzles, going to church, playing BINGO and the little bus trips to near-by restaurants, especially for Chinese food or ice cream.   

 

Surviving are four children, Mischelle (Peter) Van Buskirk of Lancaster, Mitzi (David) Hoffman and Malcolm (Patti) Herman of West Milton, and Melissa (James) Allen of Doylestown, PA.; nine grandchildren: Jennifer (Jeff) Eaton, Heidi (Liz Peitzman) Van Buskirk and Kyle (Krista) Van Buskirk, Dustin (Laurie) Hoffman and Beau (Brette) Hoffman, Joshua (Katie) Herman and Vanessa (Andrew) Biber, Christopher and Natalie Allen.  Lucille and Maurice were predeceased by twin Hoffman grandsons.  They have 15 great-grandchildren.  Lucille is also survived by her sister-in-law, Shirley Herman Wittes and many nieces and nephews. 

 

The family would like to thank the WellSpan Hospice Team (Julie) and, most especially, the many very kind and compassionate nurses and aides, at Nottingham Village.  Lucille was blessed to have many friends who showed her and her children much love and support.  You will not be forgotten.

 

Maurice and Lucille will be interred together in the Lewisburg Cemetery at the convenience of the family.  The Blank Funeral Home on State Street, Sunbury is assisting the family.
