Kenneth Eugene Trometter Obituary

Kenneth Eugene Trometter, 76, of Northumberland, passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2025.

Born Aug. 25, 1948, in Sunbury, he was the son of the late Ralph and Ethel (Ruch) Trometter. On Nov. 25, 1971, he married Julie Ann Kane of Sunbury.

Ken was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Sunbury, and was an Eagle Scout with bronze palm and advanced to Brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow with Troop 7, First Presbyterian Church, Sunbury. He was also an honorary chief of the Conrad Weiser Council and participated in their Indian ritual dances. Ken received both the Thunderbird award and the Kachina award for outstanding scout of the month and camper of the month.

In 1964 along with the Honorable Hugh Jones of the Northumberland County Court, Ken participated with the regional BSA band at the National Jamboree and played at Valley Forge National Park for the appearance of President Linden Johnson. Also in 1964 he attended Schiff National BSA leadership training school in Mendum, New Jersey. In 1965 Trometter hiked and camped in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains in Northern New Mexico while attending Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. In the same year he attained the title of Junior Assistant Scoutmaster.

In 1966, Trometter graduated with the first Shikellamy High School class and in 1973 graduated from Bloomsburg University. From 1968 to 1974 he served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Ken retired in 2003 from the Social Security Administration with over 30 years of service. His last position with SSA was that of District Manager at Lewistown. While at Lewistown, Trometter served on the board of directors of the Mifflin-Juniata Area Agency on Aging and was president of the agency’s Advisory Council. Ken also served as chairperson of the Program Operational Policy Committee and a member of the Guardianship Review Committee. He also served on the Abuse Task Force, Domiciliary Care Review Team, Long Term Care Committee and was the community representative for the Lewistown Senior Center. Trometter was the federal agency's representative with Mifflin-Juniata United Way.

Ken played trombone with the Sunbury City Band for 25 years and held the office of band treasurer for over 10 years. He also performed with the Selinsgrove Adult Band in the annual American Cancer Society benefit concerts. Ken previously played with the Sunbury American Legion Post 201 Band, the Susquehanna University trombone choir, the Montandon Post 841 Band and After Hours Swing Band.

Trometter’s masonic affiliations include membership in Lodge 22 F&AM Sunbury for over 50 years, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Forest 65 Sunbury, Harrisburg Consistory 32° AASR, Snyder-Northumberland Counties Scottish Rite Club, Irem Temple Shrine and the Sunbury Shrine Club where he served on the board a few years and also helped transport children to and from their appointments at the Shriners’ Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia.

Ken liked following Penn State sports and held memberships in the Nittany Lion Club, Penn State Alumni Association, Susquehanna Valley Penn State Club (charter member), Back the Lions (life member) and the Anthracite Area Penn State Club.

Trometter enjoyed trout fishing on Penns Creek, turkey hunting and deer hunting in Cameron County. He held memberships at the Sinnemahoning Sportsmen’s Club, East Fork Sportsmen’s Club Potter County, the Norry Gun Club and the National Rifle Association.

Ken and Julie enjoyed golfing at the Susquehanna Valley Country Club, going on cruises and attending their grandchildren’s activities.

Trometter was a life member of the Americus Hose Company Sunbury, Northumberland Fire Company No. 1, and the Shamokin Dam Fire Company. He also held memberships in the Sunbury Elks Lodge 267, American Legion Post 201 Sunbury, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 503, Selinsgrove Moose Lodge 1173 and the Northumberland County Historical Society.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Julie; their two daughters, Krista White and Erin Fleckenstein and her husband Dax; ad four grandchildren, Erik and Kara White, and Dillon and Bailey Fleckenstein.

A visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland, followed by a memorial service at noon with the Rev. Jerome Kleponis officiating.
