Jeane D. Atherton, 92, of Mechanicsburg, passed away peacefully Monday morning, Nov. 16, 2020, at Messiah Lifeways. Her beloved husband of 63 years, Charles G. Atherton, passed in August 2011.
Jeane Louise (Diehl) Atherton was born Feb. 1, 1928, in Northumberland, a daughter of the late Herbert Charles and Mabel Claire (Seeley) Diehl. She was one of five children. Her sister, Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Bender, along with nieces, nephews and cousins survive her.
Jeane was preceded in death by her three brothers, Myron "Brub", William "Bill", and Richard; her sister-in-law, Ruth Sarah (Atherton) and Ruth's husband Edward Locke; her brother-in-law, Charles Bender; and son-in-law, Richard W. Moser.
Jeane graduated high school in Northumberland and Cadet Nursing at Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia to become a Register Nurse before marriage to Charles Atherton on June 13, 1948. They lived in several Pennsylvania towns — in Glenolden, then moved to Altoona, then Enola, before making their home in Mechanicsburg. Her nursing experience was helpful as she cared for their family and relatives. Jeane was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg. Hiking, camping trips, bird watching, swimming and bowling were favorite activities. She enjoyed sewing as a pastime, as well as cooking and baking for well-attended holiday get togethers. As a resident of Messiah Lifeways for the past 18 years, Jeane was actively involved with her husband Charlie, enjoying the company of many friends and nursing care staff there.
Devoted mother of loving family who survive her are four children, Charles H. Atherton, Leanne C. Ickes and her husband David, John W. Atherton and Laurie A. Moser; as well as seven grandchildren, Kristen D. Atherton and her husband Shawn, Vanessa R. Harman and her husband Harry, Drew A. Ickes, Olivia L. Ickes, Matthew W. Moser, Rachael M. Moser and Carl R. Moser; as well as four great-grandchildren, Makayla, Christopher, Gavin, and Levi Harman. Jeane's life was full, complete and rich with family and friends who will always keep her close to heart.
