Helen Streitz Obituary

Sunbury – Helen Streitz, 93, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2021 in Nottingham Village where she had been a resident for the last ten months.

Helen was born March 21, 1927 in Selinsgrove a daughter of the late Calvin C. and Nellie (Bickel) Hare.  On November 10, 1951 she married the late Henry C. Streitz in Philadelphia.

She was a 1945 graduate of Selinsgrove High School.

Helen was devoted housewife most of her life, however, she had previously been a payroll clerk and typist for the Honeywell Co. in Philadelphia.  She had also worked as a payroll clerk for Cervin Dye Company in Sunbury.

She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Sunbury.

Helen was a devoted reader and a member of the Friends of the Degenstein Library in Sunbury. She had been going to the library for 50-60 years even back when it was on Arch Street.  She was known for her fudge.  Every Christmas she would gift them a batch  of her famous fudge, which everyone greatly appreciated.

Mrs. Streitz wasn’t a driver although she always renewed her drivers license.  A fond memory, showing her strength and determination was the day she was going to take her drivers test she was bit by her son’s Cocker Spaniel and needed stitches.  She worked her way around the course with a very painful, stitched up thumb.  When she passed the test the State Policeman gave her a thumbs up.  She spent a lot of quality time with her son because she didn’t drive.  He would take her to the library and on various road trips. They shared many special memories although she never hesitated to give him driving  advice.

Helen is survived by her son John F. Streitz of Sunbury, a nephew Ken G. Wagner of Sunbury, and a niece Karen VanGilder and Lou VanGilder of Northumberland.

She was preceded in death by her sisters June Wagner and Catherine Broome and her brother Donald Hare.

A graveside service will be held, Monday, January 18 in Pomfret Manor Cemetery at 12:00 pm.

Arrangements are by the Zweier Funeral Home, 157 Chestnut Street, Sunbury.
