Helen J Hummel Obituary

Helen J. Hummel, 99, of Northumberland, passed away Monday, July 6, 2026, at Nottingham Village, Northumberland.
Helen was born June 11, 1927, in Mount Pleasant Mills, a daughter of the late Harvey and Grace (Shaffer) Heintzelman. She was married to Gordon "Bud" Hummel, who preceded her in death.
She earned her master's degree from Bloomsburg University and was a graduate of Barbizon Modeling School.
In earlier years, she worked for the family farm in Mount Pleasant Mills doing the books and was a bookkeeper for Montgomery Ward. In later years, she worked for the Area Agency on Aging and youth services. Above all, Helen was a devoted mother who cherished her family.
A faithful member of Christ United Methodist Church in Northumberland, Helen served her church in many capacities, including teaching Sunday School for over 55 years, serving on 78 mission trips both in the U.S. and abroad, helping with the annual rummage sale, and numerous other activities.
Helen was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, the Order of the Eastern Star, and Messiah White Shrine, serving as an officer in all three organizations. She was also a member of the Grange and devoted countless hours to volunteering throughout the community, including supporting the Children's Miracle Network at Geisinger.
In her spare time, Helen enjoyed camping and was a Master Gardener.
She is survived by her sons, Francis Hummel (Barbara), Keith Hummel (Suzanne), and Scott Hummel (Thomas Dudenowicz); her daughters, Lisa Bidelspach and Tammie Garbera (Matthew); many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her sister, Fern Miller.
In addition to her husband and parents, Helen was preceded in death by her brother, Lloyd Heintzelman, and her sister, Annie Adams.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Helen's memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 604 Electric Ave., Lewistown, Pa., 17044 or Geisinger Children's Miracle Network, 100 North Academy Ave., Danville, Pa., 17821.
