Fred Pyers Obituary

Sunbury – Fred W. Pyers, 90, left this world to be with his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ on April 15, 2023 at the Hershey Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born on February 22, 1933 in Sunbury, PA a son of the late Harvey J. and Ruth E. (Sandler) Pyers and lived in Sunbury his entire life.

He graduated from Sunbury High School Class of 1952. On August 18, 1957 he married Janet E. Ebersole who preceded him in death in 2020.  In addition to being a loving husband to his wife of 63 years he was a devoted and loving father to his three children; Dennis P. Pyers and wife Jenny L. (Davis) of Carlisle, Lennis P. Pyers of York and Denise L. Pyers, who preceded him in death.  He was also a loving and devoted grandfather to his three grandchildren; Ashley M. Pyers, who preceded him in death, Justin D. Pyers of West Chester and Lindsay N. Pyers of Carlisle.  He is also survived by two sisters, Jean Brown and Joan Stanton of Sunbury as well as many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by brothers Robert Pyers, Thomas Pyers, Jack Pyers Sr. and Don “Butch” Pyers and sisters Elizabeth Backoff, Lorraine Watson, Inez Bingaman and Connie Mensch.

After high school graduation he enlisted in the Army and joined the 187th Airborne where he served in Japan during the Korean War. Upon his return to Sunbury, he attended GI night school for Auto Mechanics. He then worked for Shumaker Chevrolet as the parts manger where he met Janet who worked in the office. Following that he worked for Weis Markets in Sunbury before taking a job with a new paper mill at National Gypsum Corporation in New Columbia, PA where he worked for approximately 30 years before retiring in 1995.

He was also devoted to his local church family.  He was a member of Seven Points Christian Assembly for many years and served as an Elder and taught Sunday School for many years. Most recently he attended Front Street Christian Assembly in Sunbury. He also attended many conferences and served as a Camp Counselor at Greenwood Hills Bible Camp in Fayetteville, PA during his lifetime.


Friends and family may call from 10:00am to noon on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at the Front Street Christian Assembly, 1188 N. Front Street, Sunbury where funeral services will begin at Noon.  Burial will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
