Fred Keeley Obituary

Fred “Bud” Keeley, 87, of Northumberland, passed away on Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, at Nottingham Village Northumberland, after being a patient for only one week.  During a visit with his grandson on Jan. 18,  He remarked that “The work party is almost over, I am being released. I am going home tomorrow.” He passed away peacefully in his sleep the following morning. Fred was born Jan. 3, 1937, in Sunbury, a son of the late Charles E. Keeley Jr. and Mildred (Derk) Keeley. He spent his early childhood years in Harrisburg, Pa., until the family relocated back to Northumberland.
After being set up on a blind date by his Aunt Kate Derk, he met and married Diane Audrey Derr on Nov. 20, 1965, in the First Presbyterian Church, Northumberland, with the Rev. Harry F. Shoaf officiating. Diane preceded her husband in death on Jan. 20, 2016. They were married for 51 years celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2015.
Fred was a member of the 1956 class of Northumberland Schools, and graduated early, enlisting in the U.S. Navy for four years where he was an Aviation Electrician, and 2nd Class Petty Officer E-5. During that time, Fred obtained his pilot’s license. After returning to civilian life,  Fred was employed as a craft machinist and Tool and Die Maker for the Jules Schenk Co., The Wilhold Corporation of Sunbury, and Sonoco Products in Milton.
Fred was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving two terms on the congregation council.
Fred was an avid sports fan, and devoted Penn State follower. He never missed a game. No one dared speak to him during game time, and the outcome of the game always determined his mood. He spent 16 years coaching Northumberland Little League, and was the founder of the Girls Softball League in Northumberland. Fred spent an additional five years on the Recreation Committee for the borough.
Fred was a life member of the No. #1 Fire Company in Northumberland, and a member of the Post 44 American Legion.
