Sunbury - Ernest F. Hollenbach, 89 of N. Third Street passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital
He was born November 24, 1930 in Selinsgrove a son of the late Ernest F. and Margaret J. (Leitzel) Hollenbach.
Born in the wake of the Great Depression, Ernest spent his youth along the banks of the Susquehanna River on the Isle of Que in Selinsgrove. His life was filled with adventure from the beginning. During the 1936 flood he was rescued by a canoe. They swam in the river during the summer and ice skated in the winter. His adventures were many with his friends as they were always on the go, fishing, camping and working on the local farms.  They recycled during WWII to help support the war effort and grew a lot of their own food in their victory garden.
He was a 1948 graduate of Selinsgrove High School.
Ernest served in the Army from the age of 17 to the age of 20. He was on the distinguished “6th Army Rifle Team”.  He was deployed for the first day of the invasion of Inchon, Korea. During his years of service he served honorably in the Korean War and traveled abroad.  
After serving he met the former Florence E. McHenry, whom he wed in 1955 and they started a family together having five children. 
Ernest retired after many years of service from the Shikellamy School District.  Although his greatest joy was time spent with his family, Ernest loved to spend time on his land in Stonington in the woods and along the stream. 
Surviving are two daughters and one son in law, Pamela J. and Manny Morales of Shamokin, Kay R. Gable of Sunbury, three sons and two daughters-in-law, Keith A. Hollenbach and companion, Kathleen Boyle of Sunbury, John K. and Niki Hollenbach of Shamokin, Randal W. and Gail L. Hollenbach, one brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Sherry Hollenbach of Sunbury and numerous nieces and nephews.
Later in life he welcomed his youngest son Adam, who proceeded him in death. He was also predeceased by his wife, Florence on Aug. 22, 2006 and 11 siblings.
A private funeral service will be conducted at the Zweier Funeral Home, 157 Chestnut Street, Sunbury with Rev. Malcolm Derk officiating.
Burial with military honors will be in Pomfret Manor Cemetery.
