Her friends called her “Liz,” family and co-workers knew her as “Carol.” Carol passed away at the age of 83 on Dec. 20, 2023, from heart failure.
Born March 21, 1940, in Pottsville, Pa., to Frank O. Hummel and Marguerite (Gearhart) Hummel.
Carol graduated as a Treverton Blue Devil in 1958. She attended college at Penn State University and graduated with a degree in General Studies, continuing her education at Villanova University, where she earned a Master of Arts degree in 1972. Carol worked hard to achieve success on her own with an amazing career that spanned more than six decades at the Devereux Foundation, a private institution near Philadelphia.
Carol resided for many years in West Chester in a historic house with many cats and her best friend Grace Ann Weaver. After the passing of her life-long friend, she continued to dwell there until 2021 when she purchased a home next door to her brother in Sunbury.
She was a fiercely private and independent person who believed education was the key to success. You also knew if you wanted an honest opinion, ask Carol and she would tell you!
When asked about the best moments in her life, she spoke of a trip she and Grace Ann had taken to Europe. Carol enjoyed celebrating holidays with family and friends, traveling, shopping, eating great food, and observing new things.
Carol was the secretary of the Keystone Kringles Christmas Club. She met people from all over the country who loved Christmas and collecting antique and retro Christmas decorations as much as she did; her Angel collection was her pride and joy.
She is survived by her brother Frank W. Hummel Sr.; stepbrother John Grazul; niece, Melissa Hummel; nephew, Frank W. Hummel Jr., his wife, Kate, their children, Kathryn, Frank III, and Elizabeth. She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather John Grazul; stepbrother Gerald Grazul; faithful friend Grace Ann Weaver, and her sister-in-law, Diane J. Hummel.
Services will be held at the Mountain Presbyterian Church, Sunbury, where she was a member. A viewing will be held Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
Please join the family immediately following the service in the Church Reception Room.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to support “Cherished Cats Rescue Alliance” of Lewisburg.
Blank Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling final arrangements.
