December 10, 1931 ~ July 26, 2020 (age 88)

Obituary

Dorothy Deppen, 88, a former long- time resident of Shamokin Dam, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 26, 2020, at Nottingham Village.

She was born Dec. 10, 1931, in Sunnyside, Long Island, New York, a daughter of the late Victor Craig and Catherine (Healy) Cox. Dorothy was married for 67 years to Richard Deppen who preceded her in death in 2017. She is survived by one son, Steven Deppen; one daughter, Linda Franco; a cherished granddaughter, Marta Capron and her fiance Caleb Clements; two brothers, John Craig (Margaret) and Robert Craig, and many nieces and nephews.

Dottie had a long and happy career with Bell Telephone, then AT&T, first as a telephone operator, and eventually a supervisor, retiring after 30-plus years of service. Following retirement, she and Rich spent many happy winters in Estero, Florida, where they made many wonderful friends and enjoyed swimming, bike riding and all sorts of social activities, which kept them young for many years. She and Rich were also members of the Northumberland Boat Club and spent a lot of time cruising the Susquehanna River.

Dorothy was a proud Pineknotter, graduating with the class of 1949. She was still in touch with many of her classmates.

She was also a 50-plus year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of St. Matthews and St. Marks Episcopal churches where she faithfully attended for as long as she was able.

Dorothy will always be remembered as a wonderful cook and baker who took great pride in caring for her family and home. She enjoyed playing the organ and gardening. Each summer she had a large garden with many tomato plants that she would can for her family to enjoy all year round. She also had a unique interest in genealogy work and traced her family and the Deppen family back to their arrival in the U.S.

Burial will be private.
