Audra E. (Slear) Simpson Obituary

NORTHUMBERLAND – Audra E. (Slear) Simpson, 94, of Ridge Road, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at Geisinger Medical Center.

She was born July 4, 1930 in the Hollow of Snyder County, a daughter of the late Raymond E. and Fredith A. (Fisher) Slear. On Aug. 18, 1951, at Central Oak Heights, West Milton, she married William W. Simpson, who preceded her in death in 2011, breaking a strong marital union of 59 years.

Audra was a 1948 graduate of Northumberland High School. One of her proudest activities was being a member of the Enola Gay society. She attended class luncheons and special events and served as the last secretary and treasurer. She and her husband hosted annual picnics and New Year’s Eve gatherings for local classmates for many years. Audra also enjoyed attending the annual Northumberland Alumni banquet and was honored with being the oldest member in attendance for several years.

Audra and Bill lived in various locations across the United States, including Alabama, Florida, Kansas, Texas, New Jersey, and Okinawa, Japan, during his Air Force career. They moved back to Northumberland in 1974. Audra held secretarial roles at Brocious Lumber Company, Leon Epler Farms, and dental and osteopathic offices. She was a long-time business associate to the late Joseph W. Epler while he operated his funeral home.

Audra was member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Northumberland, since her childhood, and served in numerous capacities. Audra and her sister, Faith, actively co-chaired the prayer chain and knitted sweaters for the Knit for Kids program. Audra was very proud to contribute nearly 400 sweaters. She was also a member of several organizations, including the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years and the Pennsylvania State Grange.

In her later years, she enjoyed traveling and camping at Hidden Valley Camping Resort. She loved watching football, working on arts and crafts, faithfully sending greeting cards to others on various occasions, planting flowers, and mowing the lawn.

Audra was a devoted wife, mother, and friend, and cherished spending quality time with her family. Her greatest focus and joy were her love for her family. They are left with many wonderful memories and keepsakes that are testaments to her incredible strength, talents, and love.

She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Vicki S. and William S. Fennell, of Lewisburg, and Valinda A. Simpson, of Northumberland; one sister, Faith Fasold, of Northumberland, one brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Christine Slear, of Northumberland, and brother-in-law, Robert Louis Richard, of Winfield; and numerous nieces and nephews. While many friends were considered her extended family, she especially treasured the support and kindness of Jodi and John Bailor.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, 5/23, and from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, 5/24, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland. A private burial will be held in Riverview Cemetery at a future date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 300 Sixth St., Northumberland, PA 17857 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
