Northumberland – Joseph “Joe” A. Powell, 81, of Strawbridge Road and formerly of Pillow, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 23, 2019, surrounded by his family at his residence.
Joe was born December 18, 1937 in Lewisburg a son of the late Joseph B. and Josephine (Daddario) Powell.  He was married the Linda K. Powell from August 6, 1965 until her passing on November 20, 2017.
He was a 1955 graduate of Lewisburg High School. During his high school career he was a standout athlete for Lewisburg, playing football, baseball and basketball and was fondly nicknamed “Bear”.
January 1956 he joined the Marines, was stationed in Japan and served until January of 1959. He was a member of the Marine Corp League.
Following the military, Joe began work with General Acceptance Corporation in Philadelphia, later Merit Finance.  Joe eventually retied from Bastian Tire Sales, Shamokin Dam as credit manager.  Following retirement he enjoyed part-time work at the Mandata American Legion.
Joe held membership with local American Legion’s including; Post #504, Mandata, Post #504, Herndon, Post #201, Sunbury and Post #44, Northumberland and the VFW Post #6631, Selinsgrove. He was also a member of many local fire companies including; Northumberland #1, Northumberland Hook & Ladder, Herndon Fire Co and the Lower Mahanoy Fire Company. He held membership with the Mifflinburg Loyal Order of Moose #1396 and as an outdoorsman Joe was a member of the Union County Sportsman Club.
Mr. Powell continued his love of sports playing fast-pitch baseball in Lewisburg and was the self-proclaimed #1 fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State Football.
Surviving Joe are; two daughters and one son-in-law, Linda and Paul Fuller of Northumberland, Kristi J. Rhine of Pillow, two grandchildren, Kyle J. Weir of Sunbury, Amber K. Wendt and husband Justin of Northumberland, great-grandchildren, Chelsea Badger and husband Paul of Penns Creek, MyKenzie Tapper of Pillow and Bryce Wendt, great-great-granddaughter, Adelyn Badger, three brothers and sisters-in-law, Vince and Rhonda Powell of Winfield, Dave and Carolyn Powell of Watsontown, John and Chris Powell of Sarasota, FL, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Bev Eisenhower of Northumberland, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Julie and Gene Woomer of Harrisburg and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife of 52 years, Joe was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Timothy M. Rhine, three brothers, Frank, Mike and Jim and three sisters, Sally, Margaret and Angela.
Friends and family may visit from 9:00am to 11:00am Saturday at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home 210 King Street, Northumberland where funeral services will begin at 11:00am.
Interment with military honors will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Pillow.
