Eugene Martin Lytle Jr. died April 20th, 2018 at UPMC Susquehanna Medical Center in Williamsport, PA. He was surrounded by his children at the time of his passing. He was born April 27th, 1946 in Sunbury, PA, the only child to the late Eugene M. Lytle Sr. and Shirley L. (Smith) Lytle, who survives.  Gene grew up in Sunbury, and was in the last graduating class of the Sunbury Owls in 1965.
Eugene proudly served in the military during the Vietnam War, from 1966-1968. He was a Private in the Army and was stationed in Germany.
He was hard working and spent his years at the Sunbury Textile Mill, Rea & Derrick warehouse in Northumberland, US Postal Service, and Walmart in Shamokin Dam.
Gene’s greatest love in life was his children and grandchildren. When his children were young, he was always there with them to watch movies or sports, throw ball, shoot hoops, wrestle around, cuddle, or say yes to that stray kitty.  He attended their sporting events, coached Matt’s baseball team (the Cardinals) and always put his children first.  As his family grew, time with his children and grandchildren was of upmost importance.  Gene was always eager to babysit or just spend time with Tara’s kids. He was excited to fly to California to spend time with Sherry and her family.  He enjoyed Matt’s companionship and having a buddy to talk sports with.  In Dad’s final years, Matt lovingly cared for him at home, returning the love, care and support Dad had given us all our lives.
Gene was an avid sports fan.  In his younger adult life he could have been found at the baseball fields, either watching or coaching.  He enjoyed playing in local softball, basketball and bowling leagues.   On summer nights he would run circles around the much younger and faster guys at the courts by his home.  He often was found at the high school football games or wrestling matches with friends or his cousin George.  He was a devoted Philadelphia sports fan. Philly teams brought him both joy and turmoil, depending on the game.
Gene was always full of jokes, puns and sarcasm.  He had a great sense of humor and an even bigger heart.  He loved and spoiled his animals, and he will be missed by Molly at home.
Gene was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Sr. in 1970, and his step-father extraordinaire, William White in 2012.  He is survived by his son Matthew Lytle at home, his daughter Sherry Petta, son-in-law Ryan, and their children Elise and Gavin, of Sacramento, CA, daughter Tara Davies, son-in-law Robert, and their children Ahlena, Ian, and Chloe, of Danville, PA, and his mother Shirley Lytle, of Northumberland, with whom he had a very close bond.
Our family is grateful to the staff at UPMC Susquehanna for their compassionate care of Dad and our family during his final days.  In lieu of flowers, we would ask that you donate to your local Little League, animal shelter, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Family and friends are welcome from 10:00am to 11:00am Tuesday, April 24th at Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St. Northumberland.  Funeral services will begin at 11:00am with Rev. Joan Dodson officiating.
Burial with military honors accorded by the American Legion Post #44, Northumberland will follow at Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam.
