NORTHUMBERLAND — Lois J. Dodge, 88, of Northumberland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at Nottingham Village Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for the past five years. She was the widow of James C. Dodge, who preceded her in death in December, 1986.
She was born Sept. 10, 1925, in Northumberland, Lois was the daughter of John and Gertrude (Neidig) Walker. After the passing of her mother at age 3, Lois was raised by her aunt and uncle, Bertha and Howard Vankirk.
Lois was a 1943 graduate of Northumberland High School. Upon graduation, Lois attended horticultural school in Philadelphia. On March 4, 1950, she was united in marriage to James C. Dodge. She and her husband carried on the family business, Vankirk Flowers, Water Street, Northumberland.
Lois was a devoted wife, mother and grandma. She took great pride in her green thumb by creating floral arrangements, helping customers and maintaining two greenhouses. Lois was also active with Women of the Moose and enjoyed charity events and traveling with her local chapter. She was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Lois is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, John and Diane Dodge, Edward Dodge and Terri Dodge and Nancy Dodge, widow of the late James “Bud” Dodge, all of Northumberland; 10 grandchildren, Stephanie, J.C., Michael and Steven Dodge, Nicole Ross and Aubrie Dodge, Shawn, Matthew, Greg and Karsen Dodge; and five great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Rowyn and Jaxson Dodge, and Hunter and Averi Dodge.
In addition to Lois’s husband and son, she was preceded in death by her brothers Franklin and Carl Walker and sister Charlotte Wilson.
Friends and family may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, Northumberland, where the funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. MarthaSue Moll officiating.
Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam.
Contributions in Lois’ memory may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 300 Queen St., Northumberland, PA 17857, or the Alzheimer’s Association, 57 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701, in Lois’s name, indicating that donations be made 100% to research.
